What is the best ecommerce platform for SEO?

Businesses cannot sell online if they can't generate quality organic traffic to their site. That's why ecommerce SEO features are so important for a small business or an online store just starting out. Some of the most important SEO factors to pay attention to in an ecommerce platform are site speed, URL structure, page titles and sitewide HTTPS. BigCommerce features default URLs using the best possible format. For example www.store.com/category/product is the best format to follow. BigCommerce allows you to do this, while other platforms like Shopify force you to keep their structure, including the static "/collections/", /pages/", and "/products/". This is not ideal for SEO, so BigCommerce wins in this regard.

In addition to URL structure, site speed is a very important factor in ecommerce SEO. Features like Google AMP (accelerated mobile pages) enable pages to load with lightning speed on mobile. Secondly, image compression is another important factor, as images that take a long time to load can increase page load times, hurting your online store's user experience and SEO. BigCommerce gives their merchants Google AMP on both their product and category pages, as well as automatic image compression with Akamai Image Manager, which is why they get our highest marks there.

What is the best free ecommerce platform?

If you're looking for a free or open source ecommerce platform, you can find many readily available. When researching different ecommerce frameworks to use, it's important to ask yourself a few different questions:

  • Are you interested in self-hosting?
  • How much web development experience do you have?
  • How much creative control do you want?
  • Would you rather pay a small fee every month to have everything wrapped up in one package?

I would personally go with an option like BigCommerce over an open source system, because the small fee will save you a ton of time and development costs. Some limitations of open source ecommerce platforms are that they require more development and coding knowledge, you have to find hosting by yourself, all site maintenance and security has to be done by you, and you don't get dedicated support.
